LT1185CQ#TR Description

A 3A low dropout regulator with a programmable current limit and remote sense functionality is the LT? 1185. It can be used as a conventional negative regulator with grounded input or as a positive output regulator with floating input. The internal reference voltage is accurate to within 1% of the output voltage range, which is 2.5V to 25V.

As the pass element, the LT1185 employs a saturation-limited NPN transistor. With a much smaller die area, this device provides the linear dropout characteristics of a FET pass element. Utilizing specialized anti-saturation circuitry, which modifies the base drive to follow load current, high efficiency is maintained. Normally, the "on resistance" is 0.25.

A single 1/8W external resistor with a range of zero to three amperes can be used to program an accurate current limit. If the programming current is unintentionally exceeded, damaging currents are prevented by a second, fixed internal limit circuit. When the program current is less than 1 A, the regulator output will shut off, allowing the output voltage to be controlled by external circuitry.
